'Grating bug'

The 'Grating bug', is a 1-2mm stinging midge that exists on planets rim-ward of the Sol-Confed.

Planets with atmospheres of 5,6, and 8, and hot and humid environments have a chance of producing this pest in swampy areas, or low lying coastal zones.

The sting of a 'grating bug' deposits a cluster of microscopic eggs just inside the epidermis or in the pores of its victim. The eggs will hatch in 24-48 hours, causing intense itching, burrowing their way into the skin, as they are drawn to the minute electrical impulses of the being/creatures nerve clusters.

Itching will subside after 36-72 hours, as the larvae attach themselves to whatever nerves they are able to reach. Once attached, the larvae will begin to 'hijack' the nerve impulses, using them as energy for growth. This 'hijacking' is what gives the pest it's name. As the bug grows, the victims movements will become progressively less contiguous, causing 'jerky' movements in the affected extremity in most cases, but also has been known to cause excessive drooling, uncontrolled blinking, excessive sneezing, etc. (Referee's choice)

Medical (2) examination(diff task) will detect the larvae as a pre-cancerous growth, and easily treated with anti-cancer meds.

Residents of the coastal areas of the southern US are more than likely to be familiar with 'Noseeums', the basis for these annoying little pests.

Yuck.

Great write-up! We get a lot of Noseeums in New Orleans :(

And I dealt with a bad case of chiggers last month in Arkansas. One day near a gorgeous pond and still have light scars weeks later. Definitely Evil Referee material!
