Renkard Union

Mr. OCD

SOC-1
Some notes and thoughts on The Renkard Union.

In Gateway to Destiny T20 QLI: (Year 993)

Lords of Thunder presence has forced RU to close ranks and create a Union navy and Central Defense Policy. Cost is beginning to bite and Union is divided over course to take (appeasement vs. ignore vs. deter LOT)

Union Military is composed of legacy equipment that is old, poorly designed and best suited to patrol/escort work. However, a new Navy is being constructed and TL10 Missile Armed Destroyers, System Dfense Monitors and Cruisers are joining the fleet almost weekly.

In Cluster Book 01 - The Megusard Corporate T20 Format, Avenger Enterprises (Year 993)

The Union is divided and the question of how to deal with LOT threatens to shatter the RU completely.

Some worlds are expanding their system defenses.
Some worlds argue an effective battle fleet must be created.
Some worlds want to ignore the problem.
Some worlds want to launch a pre-emptive strike.

A passable fleet is being created but there is no clear plan what to do with it.
Many foreign and mercenary vessels are operating in RU space.

In The Megatraveller Journal #4. Digest Group. (Year 1116)

RU has fallen to LOT.
RU fleet was powerful but only sufficient for escort duty and work against pirates. RU fleet was defeated in battle at Xabthar in 1106 and RU worlds were then conquered and absorbed by LOT who maintain several battle fleets in RU, which include at least one Battleship.

In The Trailing Frontier. MGT2. Mongoose Publishing. (Year 1105)

Several Swanfei Independency Squadrons are in Mercenary Service with RU.

Almost a word for word reprinting of Gateway to Destiny factoids concerning the RU Navy.

Incidents with LOT forces are becoming increasingly common and intel suggests LOT is massing for an invasion.

At least 2 mobile shipyeards from Banserada are currently operating in RU, turning out corvettes as fast as possible.

RU is a major market for Naval and military hardware. RU may collapse due to debt even if not conquered by the LOT.

Large numbers of Halklar Savasci class fighters have been transferred to RU.

Squadrons of S-40 Gunships have recently been transferred to the RU.

Piramion Class MultiRole Vessels in service with RU.

RU 400 ton Orbital Defense Platforms described.

Megusard Corporate is hiring mercenaries for RU.

Attacks against RU by LOT will be scattered in time as well and scattered across the whole of the RU.

Reading through The Trailing Frontier it certainly seems that the LOT will be the driving force for most events taking place in The Gateway Domain going forward. It would have been cool if Mongoose, instead of simply cutting and pasting the Renkard Union stuff from gateway to Destiny and moving the situation from 993 to 1105, had decided to detail what has happened the 112 years since LOT arrived on their doorstep.

Why, if they were poised to attack in 993 did it not happen for a century? It would have been the perfect place to explore the internal politics, personalities and events in LOT area.

Even better would be detailed Orders of Battle/Fleet Compositions for Renkard Union forces and LOT forces in 1105.

I don't look at the victory of LOT over Renkard as a forgone conclusion, I think the organization/idiosyncracies of the LOT leaves a lot of opportunities for anyone opposing them.

Anyway, I don't really know the purpose of this post, other than to help organize my thoughts on this area.

I'm tossing around the idea of composing some Battle Orders for Renkard/LOT forces and wargaming various scenarios for the invasion of Renkard Space.

This is my first post. Glad to have found this community.

Because Gateway to Destiny was not back-dated from Lords of Thunder (MegaTraveller Journal #4) properly. The Thunder were still much smaller at the time. If you look at the (still incomplete, but we're working on it) polity borders on Traveller Map for the Rim War era, you'll see the Thunder are a lot smaller, but they are chewing through the little resource colonies between Renkard and the Two Thousand Worlds. Renkard trades with those worlds, so they would be aware of the Thunder, but the last time the K'kree were aggressively expansionist was literally 3000 years ago, so no one in Gateway really knows what to expect.
