MGT Only: Don't throw away your Mongoose MgT2 book

If you get the new Mongoose Update, don't throw away your Mongoose MgT2 book.

I'm not sure what else is different, but the creatures are different in the Update.

There are also some animals in The Traveller Companion, so between the three books, you have quite a Bestiary.

Are you able to provide a summary of the differences between the older MGT2 Core and the 2022 Update version? My understanding is the 2022 Update is mostly errata and page formatting.

I'm totally hanging onto my MgT1 and MgT2 core books still. I have zero plans on getting MgT2022. I don't care for any (except for maybe one change made in that book).

If I get the Update I'm selling my MGT2 mk 1 book first. Space issues.
Edit: unless either there's a pdf with the updated material in one place, or the shipbuilding stuff in the Update is the same as in another book.

The books are content-identical (with layout updates) until the end of the Space Combat chapter.

At that point the Spacecraft Construction chapter is inserted into the 2022 update. This chapter allows you to create the "most common sorts of ships likely to appear," referring the designer to High Guard for "much larger or more specialised vessels."

Hulls are highly granular: you select the exact tons. It also looks like maneuver drives have no minimum volume, but jump drives do. Thus you could design a 47 ton boat with a 4.23 ton maneuver-9 drive, a 2.6 ton power plant, and an 0.26 ton fuel tank for a month of operations.

Now for better news: in the Common Spacecraft chapter, the deckplans are 2D top-down, not that interesting but useless 3D isometric view.

The isometric view is more trouble than it's worth, especially if you print it out at larger size and try to put miniatures/markers on top of it for playing out boarding actions.

But it did convince them to provide a 2D deck plan view for every one of them, and give it away for free:
You will find all the deckplans for the core rule book and all the deckplans from High Guard in the relevant downloads section.

No intention of getting the new Core Rule Book here either. Waste of time remaking old books with exactly the same content and still issues in them from the first version that havent been addressed. I dont even like the Mongoose ship plans whether they are 3d or back at 2d. As for the better art, that is good, but it's not worth the £50 cost of a new book, especially when some things have been removed to make space for the starship construction rules that should have been in there from the start.

Mongoose really need to get their act together. Now they are producing books with better art in them, which was badly needed, they need to address the next worst things about their books - decent editing/errata and proper playtesting of new rules mechanics.

They have moved to the pre-release ordering model:
buy the product and get the pdf immediately
the pdf doesn't go to the printer until it has been thoroughly playtested by actual customers

I have suggested that there is an earlier release of the pdf but I think Mongoose want an almost out the door product before we see it.

As a result the last few releases have been much better with regards to errors etc. Some still get through, but that is almost bound to happen.

I think thats a valid stand on their part. In terms of content, the book should be "complete" with the early release being, as you said, an opportunity for beta game test errata and "1000 eyes" copy editing. While it can be engaging to be part of a products development, it can also be frustrating. Most folks just want the finished product rather than the works in progress.
