Mocking-horses

BwapTED

SOC-13
concept: false centaur-symbiote that wears man-skin upper garment/costume

description: bipedal symbiont rides on/attaches to horn-feeler of rugose, headless quadraped symbiote.
Wears syntha-skin (or real) human covering over top. Not at all a convincing disguise. Arms bend like mantis. All-black eyes. Sense organ tendrils poke through mouth-slit of garment.

Likes relatively dim, cool, humid environments.

Very touchy-feely.

stats for CT:

TBD but I think I will start by making two animals. They gain a gestalt intelligence when in close contact.
Quad body has armor equal to jack. Hooves.

More notes:
Mocking horses took to wearing man-skin very soon after first contact with humanity. Their first man-skins were peeled from the corpses of human explorers, but the mocking-horses soon developed synthetic versions.

Human scientists debate whether the skin-wearing is religious pantomime, instinctual mimesis, a threat, or a diplomatic gesture.
What is known is that the creatures refuse to take off the man-skins in their dealings with humanity, and simply do not respond to questions or complaints about the garments.

Mocking horses appear to be able to exchange complex loads of information by intermingling sensory tendrils. They sometimes attempt to ''French-kiss'' humans, though xeno-scientists don't know how much information the aliens really get from this action.
They don't speak, but do utilize a sign language and a tapping code, the latter of which is easily adaptable to radio comms with a tactile pad device as a receiver.

tech level:

When first encountered by humans, these aliens seemed to be primitive trogloxenes. They carried only simple slug throwers and blades as weaponry.
But the mock-horses reverse-engineered the gear and the vessel of that first, doomed Scout team with a skill and rapidity that no primitive race should have been able to muster. Likewise, the synthetic man-skins they created indicate a higher than initially suspected tech level.

HX note:

The only reason the third mission to the mocking horses wasn't a punitive expedition is that the Scouts' flight recorder/mission recorder recovered by the second team showed the first team died of an alien pathogen after a life support system failure, and not at the hands of the mocking horses. The aliens skinned the dead scouts, but no one can say for sure if that was malicious.

additional notes:

I'm working on some crude sketches.

I don't think I'd use these guys in the same setting as the Un-men, as the man-skin garment may bleed over too much into Un-Man themes.
Or maybe it doesn't?

I recently purchased the alien modules for K'kree, Hivers, and Droyne. These guys fill a ''centaur'' role, and might tread on Kkree's niche.
Then again, maybe not. They are not militant vegetarians/herbivores.

inspirations:

Greek mythology

that horror movie with the big roach

Kdaptists from Known Space, Larry Niven

symbiotic relationships in nature

The Conquest of New Spain

Xipe Hotec

Absolutely delightful, CM. Once again and like the un-men, the idea is creepy, scary, skeevy, and just on the right side of plausible.

Nice call back to the Kdaptists too. IIRC, Niven mentions a "stuffed" human on display in the Patriarch's museum on the Kzin homeworld. The fellow in question had landed alone during a period of peace to avenge the death of a family member in the most recent war. He took down enough of the Rat-Cats before being killed himself that the Kzin decided to honor his actions by turning over what was left of his corpse to a taxidermist.

Yay, Larry Niven!

More ideas:

The Mocking Horses' synthskins make wholly unconvincing human disguises (if that's even what they are meant to be) but are a lot more than just rubber Halloween costumes.
They are made of pseudo-life plastic, complete with tactile sensors, coolant microtubing, wickaway undersides, etc. When not in use the skins curl up into a shriveled ball, uncurling at the touch of a hand.
Combat/scouting suits may be made with armor under the outer surface, equivalent to lighter Traveller armor types.

Weirder still...

... what if they mocking-horse initially developed syntha-skins thinking it would make themselves appear less eerie and/or frightening to humans?

They find the corpses of the IISS team and are initially puzzled why what they believe to be conjoined symbiotes are covered in an outer "skin". Dissection quickly proves their initial assumptions wrong. These new discovered ,tool-using creatures are not like them, that is "a brain beast riding a leg beast", but instead seem to be a "single" beast.

The tools and technologies the new creatures brought with them prove to be a treasure trove of easily reversed engineered concepts. Because more tools and tech are now desired, the mocking horses decide to "dress up" to make themselves look more "seemly" to the new creatures. What they don't know and can't comprehend is that their use of syntha-skin makes them even more creepy to human eyes.

Wearing syntha-skin provided some unintended benefits and soon suggested several others. The environmental "skins", combat armor "skins", and others were quickly developed.

I wonder if their technical abilities can be explained along the lines of Motie Browns and Brownies? While their understanding and abilities are mostly innate, there is little impetus to do anything beyond solving the problem immediately at hand.

To do: homeworld details , animal stats, services (may not be necessary forNPC race, but notes on skills may serve), synthaskins and other gear. Posted from phone.

Like a Centaur in a Pantomime Man Costume? Driving a Jaguar?
