"Book 1" Traveller uses characteristic bonuses and penalties with weapons. Each weapon has a "center line" where there is no penalty or bonus for use.
This "center line" might actually be related to the T5 "Burden" attribute.
For example, the basic Rifle in T5 has Burden = 0. If that rifle were mapped back to Book 1, it would need Dexterity characteristic modifiers. The basic Rifle in CT imposes a penalty when Dex < 7, and grants a bonus when Dex > 7.
Consider that the Dex mods for the Rifle might be expressible as follows:
So for the plain jane Rifle (Burden=0), a penalty applies when Dex < 7, and a bonus applies when Dex > 7.
But for the Heavy Rifle (B=+3), a penalty applies when Dex < 10, and a bonus applies when Dex > 10.
Going in the reverse direction, a sanity check would take the "center line" of a weapon -- the characteristic center where there is no penalty or bonus -- and subtract 7 from it to determine the Burden of that weapon. Compare to a T5-generated weapon of similar make, and apply the difference to the formula for that class of weapon.
If the results are reasonably consistent, and reasonably close to Book 1, then the relationship is likely to be a "real" one.
This might apply equally well to non-slug throwing weapons.
Thoughts?
